CHARLIE BOYDEN

British artist and designer who explores light, objects, and furniture. His work aims to interrogate the function of everyday things and respond through a thoughtful and reimagined landscape. Frequently working with 'waste,' he persuades the materials to dictate form and hopes to educate on the importance of creating beauty from the discarded.

Spring Chair

Originally named ‘High Risk’ and chosen by UBS Insurance firm to be one of five pieces installed at their head office on Fenchurch Street.

The brief was to propose a sculpture to exist within their office. I designed a chair that would never stand up. You’d get injured just by using it...

The piece stood in their office for 3 years. My uncle worked at the firm and would give it a wobble daily. It was shown as part of my first solo show. The plastic egg seat replaced for an original Eames fibreglass, made in the 60’s. It’s an object of non-function. A thing of thought more than any object that does something... Now it doesn't just represent the idea of injury, it’s a thing that makes you think. A new way of seeing the objects that build the foundations of our world.

Stool

Initially developed in 2023 out of wood, this stool aims to waste little when being cut, flat packs and can be assembled by the user.

Here its made from a recycled plastic sheet.

Dwellings

The World’s 1st Bird Box Flight Simulator. Emulating the movement of flight, this dwelling provides its inhabitants with a safe space to procreate away from predators, while also preparing the eggs and nestlings for flight, as if instinct alone were not enough. Built entirely from Cross Laminated Timber, featuring an Oak chimney and a Steel Compression spring, this product represents the cutting edge of modern bird box construction.

THE NORTH FACE WORKBENCH

Consultation, design development, and fabrication.

Private commission with Are You Mad and The North Face. Using plastic waste produced within TNF’s company, we designed and built a workbench made entirely from plastic (apart from the hardware). Our goal was to design a hard wearing, heavy duty workbench with multiple working areas at different heights too accomodate for everyone attending the workshops. The bench also had to flat pack and utilise the under space for simple storage of plastic waste during workshops.

@areyoumad.co partnered with @chairlieboy to dismantle the old shop fit and build the new one.

Design was a collaboration between @areyoumad.co / @chairlieboy & @nike EMEA team, the project was led by Nike Global. Shout to all Nike London peoples involved too.

IDEA Publishers Store

Working with the lovely David from IDEA Publishers, I designed and built this 360 degree walk around freestanding store to house their books and other merch. The beauty of this is that it flat packs.

Deposit Policy
Terms as of May 2022

All clients are required to pay Charlie Boyden (of Objects of Strange Desire), an upfront deposit amounting to 80% of the total value for all commissioned works, projects, or engagements. This deposit is non-refundable under any circumstances.

In certain cases, an alternative deposit percentage may be negotiated between Fabrication (Charlie Boyden, of Objects of Strange Desire) and the Client. However, irrespective of any such modification, the deposit—regardless of its percentage—remains non-refundable in accordance with these terms.
